WHAT IS NUCLEAR FISSION?

Lise and Otto Hahn working in a lab, 1925

Nuclear fission is the process by which one atom is broken down into two new, lighter, elements and energy is released. It is a viable energy source, as well as being the chain reaction behind atomic weapons. The first nuclear fission reactions were enacted by scientists in Berlin using atoms of Uranium 235.
